Born in Kumasi, Ghana on 14 May 1972, Amma Asante came to the Netherlands 1978 at the age of 6. Her father, an illegal immigrant seeking a better life was one of the thousands who were granted amnesty to stay and work legally 3 years earlier in 1975. Asante grew up in the Amsterdam and went on to study Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. She is, at 44 now a member of the Dutch parliament representing the Labour Party. Asante had earlier been a councilor in the local government of Amsterdam from 1998 to 2006. She is the first person of Ghanaian descent to sit in the parliament of The Kingdom of The Netherlands.
