African Role Models – Amma Asante
Born in Kumasi, Ghana on 14 May 1972, Amma Asante came to the Netherlands 1978 at the age of 6. Her father, an illegal immigrant seeking a better life was one of the thousands who were granted amnesty to stay and work legally 3 years earlier in 1975. Asante grew up in the Amsterdam and went on to study Political Science at the University of Amsterdam. She is, at 44 now a member of the Dutch parliament representing the Labour Party. Asante had earlier been a councilor in the local government of Amsterdam from 1998 to 2006. She is the first person of Ghanaian descent to sit in the parliament of The Kingdom of The Netherlands. She is the spokesperson for her party on Higher education and science
