Meeting the proud LGBTIs of Uganda living in Holland

Africa Web TV spent a very fulfilling and inspirational evening with a group of people that are fast becoming an endangered species in Africa; LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex). The existence of these people is not being threatened by any natural causes. Instead, the biggest threat they are facing is ignorance which is fast the inevitable fuel for mob justice in many countries of Africa.

Proud Ugandans

The Ugandan situation is well documented. So when we got the news that the Out and Proud Diamond group (a LGBTI rights organisation) was meeting to discuss the launch of the Amsterdam chapter for the persecuted Ugandans, we decided to go and cover the gathering. Even though it was a last minute decision to go to the event, it was well worth the effort.

Africa Web TV met and spoke with people who have had to face all kinds of psychological abuse, physical pain, forced marriages, prison and sometimes death just because of their sexual orientations. Everyone had his or her own compelling story to tell. What was common to see was the pride with which they held their head high in spite of what they’ve been through.

As a result of the ad hoc setting, the recordings took take place in a sparsely lit makeshift room with a lot of happy voices in the background forming an unintended surround sound! This will not distract from the story these Ugandan nationals have to tell. Watch out for the Africa Web TV’s short report on the proud Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex of Uganda living in The Netherlands.
