When kidnapped & harassed in Nigeria, go to Kenya!
Our work in Nairobi, Kenya is (almost) done. So we decided to have a bit of fun by going to the famous 14 (water)falls of Thika. At Africa Web TV, we put as much dedication to play as we put in our work. When we are at work, we try to be the best in what we do. We never settle for less. We deliver quality where others are content to make lots of noises and deliver loads of garbage. What we cannot deliver, we never promise. The same goes for our playtime. We play with passion too!
After being at work almost every day in Nairobi for the better part of 11 days, we were invited by our friends to have a fun day at the 14 falls in Thika. Some of you might have already seen the pictures of the picturesque Fourteen falls of Thika, Kenya we put on the Africa Web TV’s Facebook page. The truth is, we could have put 200 more amazing pictures on the pages and none would be less better than the other. The waterfalls (14 in all, hence the name) are just amazing. The little mountain of Kilimambogo formed an idyllic background. We went there with a crew of 5 and were immediately picked up by 3 “tour guides” who were to take us across the falls.
It was on a busy day because it fell on a national holiday in Kenya. (Actually the holiday, Madaraka day, fell on Sunday. But as with most Africa countries when a holiday falls on a weekend, you just shift it to the next working day!) There were lots of boarding school kids, many families and thrills seekers who came to the falls to spend a relaxing day like we came to do. We really love that Kenyans go on holidays in their own country too. They are very appreciative of the abundant gifts of nature that their country possesses. We’ve been to places in Africa where this is not the case.
We could not have wished for better “tour guides”. Apart from helping us to navigate our way through the slippery rocks under the sometimes heavy currents of the flowing waters, they also provided us with lots of entertainment. Across the waters and the rocks, they became our comedians, our history teachers, our photographers and more. In fact one of them even took acrobatic dive from the top of tallest of the waterfalls just to entertain us. In short, there was a lot of chemistry going around. We had so much fun we lost a sense of time. We only realised how late it was when we started feeling hungry!
In the middle of it all, we were suddenly overcome with emotion. Almost a month ago, the creative director of Africa Web TV was living in a hellish nightmare in Nigeria. Kidnapped along with 4 others by Kalashnikovs gun-shooting idiots on the shores of Dodo river in Bayelsa state, released and then incarcerated with hardened criminals after we went to report the crime. And here he was standing free and tall, enjoying life as any free soul could. People warned him not to go to Nairobi because of the bombings there. Gosh, people warned him not to go to Nigeria too. Subsequent events proved those people right.
Nairobi has however so far proved to be the opposite of all he went through in Nigeria. So forgive us if we got emotional while standing in the middle of these beautiful waterfalls. In 4 weeks we have seen the worst and the best of Africa. But it is our Africa. If anyone can show us a place where the good and the bad are not present almost in equal terms, we will show you a lair. Africa is the most beautiful of all. If you are in need of a most effective therapy after being kidnapped, harassed and losing everything in Nigeria, go to Kenya! While in Kenya, go to Thika!
Have you “liked” Africa Web TV on Facebook? If yes, we thank you. If not please do as soon as possible because all the video reports of our experiences in Nigeria and Kenya (and other things we do or have done) will all be there for you to see. The link to “like” is www.facebook.com/webtvafrica. We thank you already as we continue to enjoy our last days here in Kenya.
