A Vibrant Celebration of African Creativity: Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam 2024 – Deborah Maufi
Africa Web TV did not attend AFWA 2024 with a rolling camera this year. Instead, we chose to observe the 10th anniversary of this unique event from the perspective of a visitor to the event. That way, Africa Web TV is able to give this objective insight into this edition.
Stepping into the vibrant world of Africa Fashion Week Amsterdam (AFWA) for its 10th anniversary felt like walking into a kaleidoscope of colours, culture, and pure creativity! The energy was electric, with every corner bursting with the spirit of African innovation and style. This was a vibrant celebration of African heritage, innovation, and the future of fashion, all rolled into one unforgettable experience.
From the moment the first model hit the runway, it was clear that this year’s AFWA was about more than just showcasing clothes; it was about telling stories, breaking boundaries, and bringing Africa’s dynamic culture to the global stage. The colours, the fabrics, the intricate designs – each piece felt like it had a heartbeat of its own, reflecting the traditions of the continent while embracing modern trends and sustainability.
As a fashion enthusiast and someone deeply passionate about Africa’s potential, being there was awe-inspiring. Each designer had a unique story to tell, and I found myself completely immersed in their creativity. Some collections were bold and daring, pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion, while others embraced more traditional African prints and techniques, showing how history and innovation can beautifully co-exist.
One of the highlights for me was seeing how African designers are not only embracing sustainability but leading the charge. The craftsmanship behind every garment was a testament to slow fashion, and the focus on eco-friendly materials and ethical production was inspiring. It was a powerful reminder of the role fashion can play in making the world a better place – not just in terms of aesthetics but in terms of sustainability, culture, and identity.
The 10th anniversary of AFWA was also a reminder of how far African fashion has come. What began as a niche has blossomed into a global movement, and this event was a proud declaration that African designers are here to stay, influencing trends and leaving an indelible mark on the world stage.
More than just a spectator, I left feeling part of a movement—one that celebrates Africa’s creativity, diversity, and limitless potential. AFWA’s 10th anniversary wasn’t just a fashion event; it was a bold statement of Africa’s place in the global fashion conversation, and I can’t wait to see what the next decade brings. As I left, I couldn’t help but feel inspired by the endless possibilities when culture and creativity collide. I’m looking forward to the 11th edition next year 27-30th August 2025. See you there!
