Dirty linens in public

Nairobi, Kenya. June 2013. That someone could be happy washing other peoples’ dirty linens in public is proved by this smiling lady in a busy commercial neighbourhood of Nairobi. People bring their dirty clothes to her and trust that they will get it all clean and nice when they come back. The welcoming smile never leaves her face even when a mean looking street thug came in demanding some food cash. Sometimes a smile is the gentle hammer you need to break an ice. This lady had such a smile that the photographer had to look her up again a year later when he was in Nairobi. This is the Nairobi smile of a dry-cleaner who is at peace with her job and her world. A true smile of Africa.
